We Do Not Test For Mold – We Only Remediate

Given that we are a Cleaning and Remediation Company, we have determined that being certified to be an Industrial Hygienist(IH) is veering too far from our profession.  Mold remediation and mold testing require different sets of training, certifications, and professional equipment.  For remediation purposes, the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) offers a course called, Applied Microbial Remediation Technician (AMRT).  In this course technicians learn how to properly remediate mold, but not test for it.  For testing purposes, you must have a 4 year bachelor’s degree in the particular field as well as specific IH courses. Wait... TOXIC? WHAT?

You may have seen sensational news reports that warn about the dangers of “black mold” or “toxic mold”. These reports can be alarming and confusing so it’s beneficial to get the facts to better understand mold.

Stachybotrys chartarum is the type of mold often called black mold, and it does produce allergens and irritants. However, many types of mold can produce allergens and irritants. Treat any mold with caution – stay out of affected areas and don’t touch or disturb the mold.

Understanding Mold

The Toxic Intruder

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic, float along in the air, and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor, and that odor can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

Mold Remediation Using Air Scrubber

SERVPRO of Metro Pittsburgh East technicians set up a containment in this Pittsburgh home and placed an air scrubber to remove mold spore particles from the affected area.

Air Scrubbers use a HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filter to capture the small particles of the mold spores. The HEPA air scrubbers essentially replace the dirty moldy air with clean fresh air through ventilation

Mold Found Under Kitchen Sink After A Water Loss In a Pittsburgh Home

SERVPRO of Metro Pittsburgh East was called out for emergency services after a home in Bethel Park suffered a water loss due to a leak from the supply line under the sink. Upon removal of wet cabinets under the sink, out technicians discovered mold. We sent our mold crews to treat the area. They set a containment for the affected area and placed a dehumidifier and air scrubbers to treat the area with mold.
